Scabies is a contagious skin infection and it affects all warm and moist places in the body, including the genitals.
The first thing to do when a patient suspect of Scabies in her genitals, is to remove all the pubic hair at once. Since the mites will have lesser space to hide, the damage will be restricted.
The Scabies mites are known to burrow under the skin and cause very severe itching. The itching gets very severe in the night and the skin becomes extremely red. The first symptoms show only after four to six weeks after the infection.
1. Commonly Affected Areas
The mites cannot survive outside the human body and die naturally in 72 hours. They are commonly found in between the fingers, the elbows, wrists, thighs and genitals in both men and women.
The discomfort in the genitals can be greater than other body parts. The available of warmth and moistures keeps them more active.
2. How Does It Get Transmitted
The infection is transmitted by personal contact and is easily spread between people who have a sexual relation. It can also spread by using or sharing personal belongings of an infected person.
3. See a doctor right away
The symptoms might resemble another skin problem and only a doctor will be able to make the right diagnosis. The sooner the treatment is started the faster the mites will be eradicated.
4. Symptoms in the Vagina
People sometimes confuse symptoms like vaginal odor, back pain and discoloration due to Scabies. But these symptoms are not related to Scabies and a doctor should be consulted right away. Only after thorough examination will the doctors rule out the possibility of scabies.
